What are Egg Moves?
Moves are Inherited
When you make an Egg, the parent's moves are inherited by the child. You can use this inheritance mechanism to teach Egg Moves. Since the Pokemon that hatches from the Egg will be the species of the female parent, it's fundamental to have the Pokemon with the move to be inherited as the male, and the Pokemon you want to learn the Egg Move as the female.
[Caution]Only moves the parent knows are inherited
Moves that the parent doesn't know will not be passed down to the child. Therefore, if the parent learns the desired move by leveling up, you need to raise the parent to that level and have it learn the move.
Egg Moves Are Not Learned Normally
Egg Moves are moves that need to be inherited from a parent by making an Egg. They cannot be learned through leveling up, TMs, or Move Tutors.
Example: Teaching Marill Belly Drum
Parent | ![]() Knows Belly Drum | ![]() |
---|---|---|
Child | ![]() Marill that learned Belly Drum |
Types of Inheritable Moves
Only moves learned by leveling up or from Move Tutors can be passed down as Egg Moves. Be careful, as moves learned from TMs are not inherited.
Moves from Both Parents Can Be Inherited
Moves are inherited from both parents to the child. Therefore, it's possible to create a Pokemon that has learned multiple Egg Moves.
Example
Parent | ![]() Marill that learned Aqua Jet♂ | ![]() Marill that learned Belly Drum♀ |
---|---|---|
Child | ![]() Marill that learned Belly Drum and Aqua Jet |
It's Recommended to Do Egg Moves First.
Egg Moves can be passed down from the same Pokemon species onwards. Before you start breeding for high IVs, make sure to create a Pokemon with Egg Moves.
How to Inherit Moves Between Different Egg Groups
What are Egg Groups?
Pokemon have Egg Groups. If the Egg Groups are the same, different Pokemon species (male and female) can produce an Egg. However, if the Egg Groups are different, no child will be born.
Example: Cases Where Eggs Can and Cannot Be Made
Pokemon Egg Group | ||
---|---|---|
Can Make Egg | ![]() Water 1/Fairy | ![]() Water 1 |
Cannot Make Egg | ![]() Water 1/Fairy | ![]() Field |
Inheriting Moves from Pokemon in Different Groups
When inheriting moves from Pokemon in different Egg Groups, you can pass them down by using an intermediary Pokemon that belongs to both groups.
Example: Inheriting Smeargle's move to Marill
- 1. Breed a male Smeargle with a female Psyduck to get a male Psyduck offspring.
- 2. Breed the male Psyduck with a female Marill to get a Marill offspring.

2nd Step | ![]() Field/Water 1 | ![]() Water 1/Fairy |

How to Inherit Two or More Egg Moves
Creating a Pokemon with Two Egg Moves
To create a Pokemon with two Egg Moves, you can make it by combining a male that has learned an Egg Move and a female that has learned an Egg Move.
Creating a Marill with Aqua Jet/Belly Drum
Explaining the procedure to teach Marill Aqua Jet and Belly Drum. To teach both, you need to use two different Pokemon species along with Marill.
Required Pokemon | ||
---|---|---|

Step 1: Create a Marill that knows Aqua Jet
First, create a male Marill♂ that knows Aqua Jet.
1st Pokemon (Pair) | ![]() that knows Aqua Jet | ![]() |
---|---|---|
Offspring | ![]() Male Marill that knows Aqua Jet♂ |
Step 2: Create a Marill that knows Belly Drum
Next, create a female Marill♀ that knows Belly Drum.

---|---|---|
Offspring | ![]() Female Marill that knows Belly Drum♀ |
Step 3: Combine the Marills
Combine the Marill made in Step 1 and the Marill made in Step 2 to produce an Egg.

Result | ![]() Marill that knows Belly Drum and Aqua Jet |
Reasons to Teach Egg Moves
Many Egg Moves are Powerful
The main reason to teach Egg Moves is to win in Ranked Battles. Like IV breeding, it's not necessary for progressing through the story.
Even Stronger Moves Through Combination
Some moves aren't that strong on their own, but become powerful when combined with others. Egg Moves make this possible.
Recommended Egg Move Combinations
Introducing Recommended Egg Moves
Introducing recommended Egg Moves often used in Ranked Battles! If you're unsure about Egg Move combinations, start by breeding the recommended Pokemon listed here.
Belly Drum/Aqua Jet Azumarill
Pokemon | Recommended Egg Moves |
---|---|
![]() | - Aqua Jet - Belly Drum |
Reason for Recommendation
Belly Drum is a move that maximizes Attack. After maximizing Attack, using the priority move Aqua Jet allows it to keep attacking before the opponent can use a move. Additionally, Azumarill's Ability, Huge Power, which boosts its Attack, is a strong point.
Extreme Speed Dragonite
Pokemon | Recommended Egg Moves |
---|---|
![]() | - Extreme Speed |
Reason for Recommendation
Dragonite has high Attack. By teaching this Dragonite the priority move Extreme Speed, it can be used in battles as an even more powerful Pokemon.
Wide Guard Aegislash
Pokemon | Recommended Egg Moves |
---|---|
![]() (Shield Forme) | - Wide Guard |
Reason for Recommendation
Aegislash is excellent due to its high base stats, wide range of learnable moves, and typing. It often shines in Double Battles, and teaching it Wide Guard, which can block spread moves in Double Battles, makes it an even more powerful Pokemon. Being able to block its own weakness, Earthquake, is also excellent.
