What are Individual Values?
Hidden Stats Determined for Each Individual
Individual Values (IVs) refer to hidden stats determined for each individual Pokemon. For example, even if you raise two Dragonites to level 100, their HP values might be slightly different. This phenomenon occurs because their IVs are different.
IVs are Determined at Birth
IVs are already determined when you catch a Pokemon in the wild or when it hatches from an Egg. Also, they are randomly determined for each stat, ranging from 0 to 31. To create a stronger Pokemon, you need to choose individuals with higher numbers.
Adjustable Since Sun & Moon
In previous Pokemon games, it was impossible to adjust IVs after obtaining a Pokemon, but since Sun & Moon, you can adjust a Pokemon's IVs after obtaining it.
Not Necessary for Story Completion
If you are only playing through the story, you generally don't need to worry about them. They become necessary when tackling Rating Battles or post-story facilities like the "Battle Tree".
How to Check Individual Values
Can Be Checked In-Game.
Since Sun & Moon, anyone can easily check IVs using the Judge function.
The Judge Function Must Be Unlocked
The Judge function, which allows you to check IVs, cannot be used from the beginning. It becomes available after clearing certain conditions.
Conditions and Method to Unlock the Judge Function
- - Clear the main story (enter the Hall of Fame for the first time)
- - Hatch 20 or more Eggs
After clearing the above conditions, speak to the trainer next to the reception desk at the Battle Tree to unlock the Judge function.
Check from the PC Box
Once the Judge function is unlocked, you can use it from the PC Box. Press the Judge button and move the cursor over the Pokemon whose IVs you want to check, and a graph will be displayed on the top screen. The graph has comments, from which you can understand the IVs.
Judge Function Comments and IVs
Comment | IV |
---|---|
Best | 31 (V) |
Fantastic | 30 (U) |
Very Good | 26-29 |
Pretty Good | 16-25 |
Decent | 1-15 |
No Good | 0 (No Good V) |
How to Breed for Individual Values
What is IV Breeding?
It means selectively breeding Pokemon with high IVs. Since Sun & Moon, it's possible to raise IVs, but it's impossible to lower them. Therefore, this process is essential when you want a Pokemon with an IV of 0 in Speed, for example.
Items Used for Breeding
There are broadly two types of items that can be used for breeding (one type has multiple variations). If you use an Egg without items, 1 to 3 IVs will be randomly inherited from the parents' 12 total IVs.
Item to Inherit 5 IVs
The item "Destiny Knot" allows 5 IVs to be inherited from the parent holding it. However, the stats that are inherited are random.
Example of Inheritance
When an Egg is produced with the ♂ parent holding a Destiny Knot
Parent ♂ | Parent ♀ | Child | |
---|---|---|---|
HP IV | 31 | 30 | 31(Inherited from ♂) |
Attack IV | 31 | 30 | 31(Inherited from ♂) |
Defense IV | 31 | 30 | 31(Inherited from ♂) |
Sp. Atk IV | 31 | 30 | 31(Inherited from ♂) |
Sp. Def IV | 31 | 30 | 31(Inherited from ♂) |
Speed IV | 31 | 30 | 0-31 (Random IV) |
Items to Inherit Specific Stats
Holding a Power item allows you to fix the stat that will be inherited. Since 1 to 3 IVs are inherited, the remaining 0 to 2 inherited IVs will be chosen randomly.
