Gyarados Deck - Pros / Cons

  1. Gyarados's Attack has powerful additional effects.
  2. Misty's Energy Acceleration allows for quick strikes.
  3. Gyarados requires a lot of Energy.

Gyarados's Attack has powerful additional effects

  1. Gyarados

Gyarados's Attack can randomly discard 1 Energy from the opponent's battling Pokemon as an additional effect. It works particularly well against opponents like Mewtwo ex or Charizard ex, who must discard 2 Energy due to their Attack effects.

Misty's Energy Acceleration allows for quick strikes

  1. Misty
  2. Frosmoth

By successfully using Misty for Energy Acceleration, you can quickly utilize Frosmoth's Attack early in the game. Since Frosmoth requires only 2 Energy to attack, if you flip heads once, you can immediately attack using Attach Energy from Zone.

Gyarados requires a lot of Energy

  1. Gyarados
  2. Lapras

Gyarados requires 4 Energy to attack, which is quite heavy, and it lacks other Attacks, making it slow to get started. It’s crucial to find ways to buy time with other Pokemon until Gyarados is ready. While Lapras also needs 4 Energy for maximum damage, it can attack with just 1 Energy, making it useful both in the early and late game.

Gyarados Deck Strategy

  1. Start the game with Lapras.
  2. Grow Frosmoth on the Bench.
  3. In the late game, fight with either Gyarados or Lapras.
Start the game with Lapras
  1. Lapras
  2. Magikarp

At the start, you should battle with Lapras, which can attack with just 1 Energy. If you end up starting with Magikarp in the Active Spot, try to escape as quickly as possible using X Speed or Attach Energy from Zone to switch with a Pokémon on the Bench.

Grow Frosmoth on the Bench
  1. Snom
  2. Frosmoth

While Lapras is in the Active Spot, focus on evolving Snom into Frosmoth on the Bench. You want to complete this before Lapras leaves the Active Spot. By putting your opponent to sleep, you can buy time until Gyarados or your second Lapras is ready to attack.

In the late game, fight with either Gyarados or Lapras
  1. Gyarados
  2. Lapras

Once you have 4 Energy on either Gyarados or Lapras, bring them into the Active Spot. Generally, you want to prioritize using Misty for Energy Acceleration on Gyarados, but if you think it will take some time or you feel that you will be at a disadvantage if you tried to set up Gyarados, it's also a good option to focus on powering up Lapras.
