- Select "Animal Grooming" from the Ability Wheel
- Hold the Ability Button While Moving Towards an Animal
- Release the Ability Button As Soon as the Brush Icon Appears
To groom an animal, open the Ability Wheel and choose the "Animal Grooming" ability. If you select a different ability you won't be able to groom an animal even if you're close to it, so make sure to select the ability first.
The "Animal Grooming" ability becomes available after the event with Ruby & Jean in Chapter 1 of the main quest. You can obtain the Sketch from the Heart of Infinity, and craft the outfit that will unlock this ability.
When you spot the animal you want to groom, approach it with the ability button held down. While the ability button is pressed, Nikki's clothes will change to the animal grooming outfit.
When the brush icon appears, it's your cue to start brushing. Releasing the ability button will trigger the animal grooming animation, and you'll collect crafting materials such as yarns and feathers.
Obtain the Mink Whimstar with Animal Grooming
You can obtain the Whimstar in mink form with animal grooming. However, they are highly cautious and will escape if you approach them normally, so hold down the ability button from a distance and approach slowly until you can get close to brush them.

Approach Cautious Animals From a Distance
Some animals, like cats and birds, are cautious and will flee if Nikki gets too close. Hold the ability button and walk slowly to avoid startling them. If they run away before you can groom them, try approaching them more carefully next time.
You Cannot Groom the Same Animal Consecutively
Once you have groomed an animal, you cannot groom it again consecutively until a certain amount of time has passed. If you want more of the same type of material, search for another animal of the same kind.
