How To Heal In Age of Calamity
Pick Up Apples
One way to recover hearts when your character's HP is low is to pick up apples that mobs drop when you kill enemies. These are not guaranteed to drop on every enemy, though it seems that large foes will drop them with greater frequency.
Press L and B
The second way of healing is to press the L and B buttons together. When you do so, a menu with a variety of attack options will appear on your screen - you should be familiar with this already. By pressing the B button, you'll be able to use a bit of your food gauge to replenish your HP! This gauge goes down the more food you eat it.
Running Into Apples Refills Your Healing Gauge
By running into an apple that you see floating in the field, you can add that apple to your gauge, allowing you to recover health later on. It's crucial to keep your healing gauge prepped and ready, especially if you're on a higher difficulty mode!
Can't Pick Up Apples When Full
If you find yourself unable to pick up apples, that probably means that both your health and apple gauge are full! There's nothing you can do here, but if you take damage later you can come back to the apple and pick it up then.
Cooking Doesn't Heal
Unlike in Breath of the Wild, you won't be able to pause the menu to heal up repeatedly during a battle. Food is selected at the start of a mission, and will provide you with special buffs, but it will not give you moment-to-moment healing. Gathering materials and cooking is still worth doing, however, as the bonuses you get will help you clear stages easier!
