There Are 2 Types Of Difficulty
Risk of Rain 2 features 2 types of difficulty when playing the game. One will require you to set it before playing the game, while the other acts independently. These are called Starting Difficulty & Scaling Difficulty respectively.
Starting Difficulty Is Manually Set
Before starting a run, you will be able to choose between three types of difficulty. Starting difficulty will determine different aspects of your run. This difficulty will be constant throughout your whole run.
Starting Difficulty List
Difficulty | Description |
---|---|
Drizzle | Reduces difficulty for players new to the game. Weeping and gnashing is replaced by laughter and tickles. |
Rainstorm | This is the way the game is meant to be played! Test your abilities and skills against formidable foes. |
Monsoon | For hardcore players. every bend introduces pain and horrors of the planet. You will die. |
Starting Difficulty Determines Game Factors
Depending on the starting difficulty that you set, different aspects of the game will be altered. Below are the factors affected by the starting difficulty that you set.
List Of Factors Affected By Starting Difficulty
- Damage enemies do
- Time It Takes For Scaling Difficulty to Increase
- Time It Takes For Teleporter To Charge
- Types Of Enemy Spawns (Bosses, Elite, etc)
Scaling Difficulty Slowly Increases Over Time
This difficulty is found when actually playing the game. The longer you play, the harder the game gets. It takes a set amount of time before the difficulty rises. You can track this by checking the top right corner of your HUD.

- Easy
- Medium
- Hard
- Very Hard
- Insane
- Impossible

- HAHAHAHAHAHA...
Does Not Stop At HAHAHA Difficulty
The Scaling Difficulty does not stop increasing once the final difficulty "HAHAHA" is reached. The bar will increase endlessly until you flatline in the game.
Scaling Difficulty Increases Enemy Modifiers
Enemy modifications will start to increase as the scaling difficulty rises. This will make the game more hectic on top of the starting difficulty you've set. Below are the enemy modifiers increased when scaling difficulty rises.

- Instances a mutated enemy spawns (elemental enemies)
- Enemy spawn count
