Gunlancers are the ones who take the enemy's damage as they are the first line of defense. They protect the whole party with their stance and battlefield shield, absorbing the opponent's attacks while dealing huge amounts of damage.

Gunlancer - Unique Mechanic
Shield Meter
As you deal damage, you can build up your Shield Meter to use either the Defensive Stance or Shield of Battlefield. The Defensive Stance will slow down your movement speed but it will give you a massive shield to tank incoming damage. The Shield of Battlefield will allow the Gunlancer to jump into an area to deal damage and channel a large dome that reduces all incoming damage for all allies inside its radius.
